Students of the Kiparang'anda Primary School in Mkuranga, Tanzania, work together on a mapping project with Women Building Tanzania on May 30, 2022.
Women Building Tanzania is a growing project that began as a partnership between Michigan State University and the University of Dar es Salaam. Their goal is to support young women by increasing their educational opportunities, health, and wellness throughout their primary and secondary education.
Recently, the team returned to the Kiparang'anda Primary School in the Mkuranga region to visit the schools, check on the student’s overall wellness, and to inspire young girls in the world of STEM by putting on a GIS mapping workshop. The country being notorious for female genital mutilation, with the hopeful end to its practices in the near future, the goal of this workshop was not only aimed to inspire but to educate the students on how to better understand their community.
The students were given maps of Tanzania and instructed to pinpoint places on the map they were familiar with. They were then given a crash course to use a compass, go out into their campus, and to design a map of their school themselves.
