Quantez Laws (he/him), of Detroit, Mich., poses for a portrait on July 19, 2023. Quantez, who identifies as a gay male, spent almost all of his life living in the city of Detroit. Being the eldest of four, with a young single mother and a father who was never in the picture, he found himself taking on a mature role from a very young age. Quantez always feels like he has to apologize for his presence, saying “I’m sorry” every time he shares a part of himself. He loves who he is but always hesitates to embrace himself. He has always been known to give more than he takes. He is currently working toward living his life authentically and confidently.

After the composites are made, he gives the layered images stark movements to evoke an anxious experience for the viewer.
